Welcome to the Land of Kitakami
In Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, the Teal Mask DLC introduces a brand new area called the Land of Kitakami. The opening mission takes you on a school trip through a charming area filled with old world charm. The first part of this Kitakami exploration takes us through Kitakami Road and Mossui Town’s community center. As part of this walkthrough, you will learn all the main story objectives to complete this quest. Throughout the rice fields, you will encounter trainer battles.
A Call From Professor Jacq
After downloading the DLC or reaching a certain point in the game, Prof. Jacq will call you about a special school trip the Academy goes on every year where they collaborate with other schools. The entrance of the Academy is where you can learn more about this and get started.
As soon as you return to the school, you’ll find a woman wearing a purple jacket and tera crystal earrings. She will get a dialogue box when you approach her, confirming she’s the person you should speak to about the school trip. A cutscene will be activated when you talk to her.
Briar is the name of this woman, a teacher who helps organize this trip. Moreover, you’ll receive an update to your Pokedex with the Kitakami Pokedex. As soon as the cutscene ends, you should speak with Briar again to begin your journey to Kitakami. Tera crystals seem related to Terapagos, the Pokemon whose Scarlet/Violet Book she muse about. After she finishes, you’ll travel to the new region for what seems like a long time.
Before heading out, make sure you arrange your party to have a few things at least Lv. 55-60. The Teal Mask seems to have Pokemon leveled around the endgame of the original game, meaning the first Pokemon you meet will be in the mid-50s. Plan accordingly.
Kitakami Welcoming Committee

You’ll need to notify Mossui Town about one of your classmates’ illness once you reach the campus. Here you will have your first chance to explore, as there are a number of new Pokemon from previous games in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet – Yanma, Cutiefly, and Corphish, to name a few. In this area, you can also see Johto Wooper. The Kantonian Geodude can be found in a cave behind the bus stop where the adventure begins.
Getting to town involves winding through the rice fields north up the road. Trainers can also be fought in the area if you want to get a feel for the area.
Battle vs. Mayu the Festival Girl | ||
---|---|---|
Lv. | Pokemon | Type |
LV. 54 | Surskit | Bug/Water |
LV. 54 | Chingling | Psychic |
Having a Flying-type Pokemon or move like Surskit, and a Bug-, Ghost- or Dark-type Pokemon or move like Chingling can help you school Mayu. Due to its low defenses, it may be possible to defeat it with a neutral Flying-type attack anyway. In the area, however, you can find Poochyena, Yanma, and Sewaddle who can help you learn Chingling.
Soon, you’ll be walking through rice fields that have a wide variety of things strewn about. Some of these can be left for a later time, since you may have difficulty getting across the mounds in the irrigation fields because you cannot ride your mounted Pokemon in this part of the story. As well as these two trainers, there is another to the east.
Battle vs. Shinsaku the Ruffian | ||
---|---|---|
Lv. | Pokemon | Type |
LV. 55 | Wooper (Johto) | Water/Ground |
LV. 58 | Ekans | Poison |
Make sure you use a Grass-type move on Wooper, as it is 4x weak to them. Be careful about sending physical attackers against Ekans unless you’re sure you can overwhelm it. It is weak to ground and psychic attacks, but has the ability Intimidate that lowers physical attacks.

You’ll be immediately challenged to a battle by one of the new characters in the DLC, Carmine, if you decide to participate in these battles and/or go hunting Pokemon in Mossui Town.
Trainer Battle Against Pokemon Trainer Carmine

---|---|---|
Lv. | Pokemon | Type |
LV. 60 | Poochyena | Dark |
LV. 60 | Vulpix (Kanto) | Fire |
LV. 60 | Poltchageist | Grass/Ghost |
As long as you see Carmine coming, you can take her down. She has the element of surprise on her side at this point, nevertheless, if you see her coming, you can take her down. Vulpix is unable to defeat Fighting-, Bug-, and Fairy-type offenses, while Poochyena is in trouble against Water-, Rock-, and Ground-types. In the area around you, you will find several of these types.
With Polotchageist, it’s a little tougher since it’s a brand new Pokemon and an element of surprise. Even so, it remains weak to Fire-, Dark-, and other Ghost-type Pokemon. As well as not having the most defenses, it does not appear to be very intelligent. Don’t let it keep surprising you, so take it down as soon as possible.
Once you defeat her, you can heal up at the Pokemon Center at the tent to your right with a curious new design for the woman running it. Step over in front of the community center door to continue the story.

Once this cutscene is over and youβre properly introduced to the town center, you can speak to the receptionist if youβd like to change your display options since there is a slight adjustment to the HUD while youβre in Kitakami. Go towards the double doors to the north to go to sleep and advance the story.
A proper introduction takes place the following morning between Carmine and her little brother Kieran. When you receive the Roto-Stick for professional selfies, you will be asked to speak with Kieran and Carmine. When doing so, Kieran will be the more insecure sibling.
Trainer Battle Against Pokemon Trainer Kieran

---|---|---|
Lv. | Pokemon | Type |
LV. 59 | Sentret | Normal |
LV. 60 | Yanma | Bug/Flying |
Sentret goes down with a hard hit from a Fighting-type, while Yanma can be hit with Fire-, Electric-, or Flying-type based attacks. Yanma should be eliminated as soon as possible so that it does not become a nuisance.
When Kieran is defeated, you make quick friends with him and get the quest marker for the first of three historic signboards you’ll need to visit in west Loyalty Plaza.

Perrin the photographer can also be found on your way out of the western exit. After completing your current task and capturing 150 Pokemon in the Kitakami Pokedex, you’ll be asked to come back to her. Paldea and Kitakami Pokedexes seem to be accounted for as one.
