Getting to the Gauntlet of Shar

To access the Gauntlet of Shar, players must first be familiar with the quests “Find Ketheric Thorm’s Relic,” “Find the Nightsong,” “Kill Raphael’s Old Enemy,” “Lift the Shadow Curse,” and “The Chosen of Shar” companion quest. All of those quests, though, require you to complete The Gauntlet of Shar, and reaching it requires you to get past the first puzzle: Touching an Umbral Gem on the top floors.

Meet Balthazar

In the Thorm Mausoleum, you’ll head deeper once you’ve completed the Umbral Gem puzzle. Then use the mushrooms to jump to the next area in the Umbral Gem room by going up the stairs.

As you approach Balthazar’s undead servants, you will encounter a room full of them. Balthazar’s lab door will open once they are wiped out. Ketheric’s Relic can be better understood by talking to him (but not much). It is up to you whether you want to side with him, kill him, or ignore him completely.

Your path through the Gauntlet of Shar continues east.

The Gauntlet of Shar

In order to complete the Gauntlet of Shar, you must collect four (more) Umbral Gems that will be placed on two pedestals. During the trials and with Raphael’s Old Enemy, you will collect gems.

We’ll go in the order you reach the trials (and other quests) so that you can choose which one to do first.

Soft-Step Trial

The first trial you reach is the Soft-Step Trial. Your goal is to pass through it without getting spotted by the patrolling Shadows. A Druid with Wildshape has a bit of an advantage when hiding, but even better is just casting Invisibility on someone. Just make sure they can pick locks.

In the Soft-Step Trial, you are the first to reach the end. The Shadows patrolling through it are trying to catch you. If you don’t, you’ll be spotted by them. Having Wildshape increases a Druid’s ability to hide, but casting Invisibility on someone is even more powerful. If you want them to pick locks, just make sure they are capable of doing so.

Faith-Leap Trial

Continue north and descend the stairs outside the Self-Same Trial. In the bottom left corner, there is a door that leads to the Faith-Leap Trial.

In this instance, the leap of faith (in the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade sense) is more important than the literal leap. Change the camera’s view to Tactical View by pressing O at the altar. You can reach the other side by walking along the tiled pattern in the floor.

You will need to separate a member of your party to lead them to the far side of the mountain where the Umbral Gem is located.

The Silent Library and the Spear of Night

Across the street from the Silent Library lies a room called the Silent Library where a librarian casts silence over the entire room. There are no spells you can cast inside because of that.

You have to clear the area of any baddies – including the Librarian – before you can start poking around. A book called Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger is the most important item you’re after, though you’ll also find a few spell scrolls and some trials’ descriptions. There’s a trapped bookshelf in the northeast corner of the library where you can find it.

For this, you’ll need a good Sleight of Hand skill – the door is DC 21, so you’ll need a DC 21 lockpick to open it. There is a pedestal inside the room called the Riddle of the Night that needs an item to be solved. There is a secret door inside Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger. Put the book in there and the door will open.

The Spear of Night can be found through this path.

Raphael’s Old Enemy, AKA Yurgir

In order to complete the Gauntlet of Shar, one more Umbral Gem needs to be collected. Continue eastward on the top floor. To the north, there are some broken stairs that lead to a Displacer Beast. Follow the Displacer Beast to the east as it leads you across the gap in the stairs.

A kind of devil (Yurgir the Orthon) awaits you in the room it leads to. From Raphael’s Old Enemy quest, this is Raphael’s Old Enemy. A loophole in his demonic contract can be found by talking to him or killing him (and his lackeys).

The Umbral Gem will be yours regardless of how you handle it.

Find the Nightsong

Place an Umbral Gem on the altar at the pedestal. As a result, you will be able to access a platform that will allow you to go deeper into the Gauntlet.

Another pedestal and altar can be found at the bottom. You will be able to open a door after placing the remaining three Umbral Gems. There is a portal to the Shadowfell and the Verge of the Shadows waypoint inside.

To reach the bottom, jump through the portal and take advantage of the low gravity. At the Relic of Ketheric, you’ll find the Nightsong, Ketheric’s Relic. Regardless of the outcome of the interaction, you will receive the Moonlight Glaive as a reward and finally understand Ketheric Thorm’s immortality. As a result, Shadowheart’s companion quest “Chosen of Shar” will be completed.
