In Link’s house, you awaken after the opening sequence. In Hyrule Castle’s basement dungeon, Link and his Uncle hear the telepathic call of Zelda. While he goes out for the night, he tells Link to stay in the house. Of course, Link will not follow what his Uncle says. It’s quite the opposite, my friends…

Link is now under your control. Find the Lamp in the treasure chest in the house and explore it. As soon as you’ve got it, turn it off (so as not to waste magic power by accidentally using it) and exit the house. There are no paths to anywhere here because Hyrule soldiers who have not yet been brainwashed by Agahnim’s evil magic are blocking the way. So jump off the ridge where Link’s house is, go north to the next screen, then go west, then north, across the bridge. Since there are soldiers guarding the castle gates, you won’t be able to enter, so head north along the wall. A solitary bush will eventually be found surrounded by some stones. This bush can be picked up and thrown to reveal a hole. You’ll now be in Hyrule Castle’s basement if you jump into this hole!

Hyrule Castle

After landing, turn left. You can obtain the Fighter’s Sword and Fighter’s Shield by speaking to your Uncle there. We are prepared to rescue the Princess on our own with these tools! The door on the south side can be accessed by turning left from here. The first enemy you’ll encounter is here. A Green Knight will be found to your right, whom you will need to kill. You can get Rupees and Green Jars from the treasure chests there and under the pots. As an alternative, you can enter this area through the door and climb the stairs. You will now be inside the castle walls after leaving the castle. Right before you come to the castle’s main entrance, you will find the path leading there. Guarded by green knights, the area is secure. Walk along the pathway to get on it. By entering the castle through the door, you should kill or avoid your enemies.

After entering the castle, there are many options for what you can do. It is on the main floor that the door on the left side of the room is located. As soon as you pass through that door, turn right and go north through another door. After killing the Green Knights, follow this corridor north, then turn right through the next door. Follow this horizontal corridor to the right and descend the stairs to the left to reach the basement. In this place, there will be a Blue Knight attacking you. In the same room, kill him and open the treasure chest to obtain the Dungeon Map. Once you have the newfound Key in your hand, go through the southern door in the room.

You should work your way south, screen by screen, in this area. There are some deep chasms surrounding the areas you are walking on, so be careful. You will live but lose a heart if you fall in! As well as knocking enemies into these pits, you can throw pots and jars at them to boost them into the bottomless pits, or slash them to knock them into them. You will have to avoid the chasms and kill various enemies as you make your way south. Once you’ve reached the next area, swing left. You should work your way left, ignoring the staircases that lead to and from the left. Go left, then north and through the door. Once you’ve gone left all the way, go north and through the door. You will be able to open the sealed door to your right after killing the Green Knight in this small room. In this room, you should go. Get the Boomerang by killing the Blue Knight within, grabbing the Key he drops, and opening the treasure chest there. Go back to the previous room after equipping the Boomerang. With the Key you just found, head north, up the stairs, and unlock the door there. Now that the door is open, enter the next area of the dungeon.

To get to this part, go north, down the stairs, and through that door. There are a linear series of stairs leading down to the basement floor of the dungeon. Head south and then east toward the jail cells once you’ve reached the bottom. As you enter Zelda’s jail cell, you will meet the game’s first boss.

Boss One: Ball and Chain Trooper

It is rather easy to defeat Ball and Chain Troopers. This miniature soldier wields a large ball and chain weapon with great skill despite his small size (nearly as big as you). Occasionally, he swings it around him as he moves around. Slash him once or twice while he is moving, then move away quickly before he swings that ball and chain around. As soon as he does that, move back in and do the same thing again. You can defeat him very easily. You don’t have to get as many hits in one go – just two or three hits will do. The jail cell to Zelda’s left has three jars if you want to kill him easily. Ball and Chain Troopers will die if two of these jars strike them.

Ball and Chain Troopers drop the dungeon’s Big Key when killed. Open the jail cell where Princess Zelda is being held with this key. Upon escaping the castle, she will thank you and show you how to access a treasure chest in her cell to obtain some rupees, and then we can begin our escape!

Sewer Passageway

We need to escape the castle through some secret passages and get to the Sanctuary after we get the Princess back. In the throne room, you will find the secret passages! With Zelda trailing behind you, work your way up to the first floor of the castle from the jail cell. Get back to the castle’s main room after fighting off any foes you encounter. You can reach the higher part of this room by turning left and going up the stairs. Go up the stairs and into the next room after following this high part of the wall around to the center. You have now entered the throne room. You should proceed straight up the stairs, and then approach the throne. According to Zelda, there is a shelf behind it with ornaments. By pushing it to your right, you will reveal a secret doorway on the left side of it. The sewer system of Hyrule can be accessed through this door.

Link needs to wear his Lamp in here. Don’t forget to light up the torches here, even though you don’t have to. Work your way north and to your right, until you reach the doorway there, avoiding or killing the Rats along the way. In this doorway, there is a staircase leading down. The next room in the sewers is reached by going through this door and down the stairs. The next door leads downward, so turn left here. Go north up the corridor until the room opens up in this next room. There is a treasure chest on the right side of the room. To get a key, open it up. Make your way north to the locked door while avoiding or killing the rest of the enemies in the room. You’ll be in a more watery part of the sewers when you open it with the key you just found. As you approach the Sanctuary, Zelda will notify you.

It’s simple from here. Go left and north in the next part to reach another room in the deep sewer. Avoid the enemies in the first room and go left to reach the door. Make sure you kill all of the Rats and Bats in this room, since one is holding the Key you need to open the door at the north of the room. It is lit up in this room.

The left wall has cracks in it and there are lots of enemies. There are some goodies behind them, but you can’t get there without Bombs. There’s nothing vital back there, so don’t worry about it. To access the upward door, go north through this room and push the block out of your way. Go south through the door and ignore the enemies in this room. Throughout this room you will find two switches. Do not pull the door on the left if you don’t want to encounter some mean enemies. Pull the door on the right to open the door in the room. You will be taken to the Sanctuary once you pass through the door.
